PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- High-power amplifiers developed by CPI International, Inc. (Nasdaq: CPII) were recently utilized in a successful demonstration of Raytheon Company's (NYSE: RTN) newly-designed Dual-Mode, All-Band, Relocatable Communications Transport Terminal (DART-T) at Fort Huachuca in Sierra Vista, Ariz. for key personnel from the U.S. Army and Marine Corps. The DART-T is a highly transportable, self-contained communications terminal that includes custom Ku-band traveling wave tube amplifiers developed by CPI International (CPI) and is configurable for operation in satellite and troposcatter (TROPO) communications. CPI is the parent company of Communications & Power Industries, Inc., a leading provider of microwave, radio frequency, power and control solutions for critical defense, communications, medical, scientific and other applications.

In comparison to the two antennas used on traditional TROPO systems, the DART-T utilizes a single antenna with a dual-beam feed system, reducing the size of the new system and enhancing its portability. In addition, with the ability to operate using either a satellite or TROPO configuration, the DART-T is extremely flexible and allows for the selection of its operational mode in the field. DART-T enables numerous configurations, including Ku-band quad diversity and C-band dual diversity frequencies for TROPO operations, C-band, X-band, Ku-band and Ka-band frequencies for satellite operations and C-band and Ku-band frequencies for dual mode TROPO or satellite operations.
TROPO, or "over the horizon" communications, is the ability to transmit radio waves around the curvature of the Earth by bouncing signals off of irregularities in the troposphere without using satellites. The troposphere is the lowest portion of the Earth's atmosphere, approximately six miles above the Earth's surface. While the U.S. military currently employs TROPO systems for tactical and strategic communications throughout the world, it currently relies most heavily on satellite communications. The recent demonstration of Raytheon's DART-T at Fort Huachuca verified TROPO's ability to play a more significant role in dependably providing additional bandwidth enabling the rapid transmission of large amounts of video and voice data information.
